Disney has become the first major content licensing partner of Sora (OpenAI’s AI video generation platform).
Over the next three years, users will be able to create short videos featuring more than 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars using Sora.
Disney has invested over $1 billion in OpenAI and licensed its iconic properties—including Frozen, Zootopia, The Lion King, and Star Wars, along with more than 200 characters from Marvel (encompassing animated and illustrated versions of both animated and live-action roles)—for use in Sora, OpenAI’s generative AI video software. Additionally, ChatGPT will be able to generate related images based on user descriptions. Both parties have emphasized a commitment to responsible AI use, ensuring the rights of human creators are not compromised.
The agreement includes provisions to: protect creators’ rights; prevent the generation of illegal or infringing content via AI; strengthen age restrictions and content safety measures; and prohibit misuse of real individuals’ likenesses and voices (for example, user-generated videos may feature Iron Man in his helmet but will not include Robert Downey Jr.’s face or voice).
This three-year licensing deal marks the largest collaboration to date between a major Hollywood studio and an AI company.
In a joint statement, Disney and OpenAI affirmed: “We respect individuals’ right to appropriately control the use of their voices and likenesses.” This means such usage will not involve performances by real actors, and the companies will block the generation of illegal or harmful content.
Disney will also integrate OpenAI technology into its own operations, including: leveraging OpenAI’s API to develop new products and tools; using AI to add new features to Disney+; and providing Disney employees with access to ChatGPT to boost productivity.
The Disney and Pixar animated characters available for video generation on Sora include Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, the Beast, Cinderella, Baymax, Simba, Mufasa, and roles from Encanto, Frozen, Inside Out, Moana, Monsters University, Toy Story, Up, Zootopia, and many more.
Animated or illustrated versions of Marvel and Lucasfilm/Star Wars characters will also be available, such as Black Panther, Captain America, Deadpool, Groot, Iron Man, Loki, Thor, Thanos, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, the Mandalorian, Stormtroopers, and Yoda.
