Bondi Beach Shooting: A Tragic Attack on Sydney’s Jewish Community
17th Dec, 2025

On December 14 (local time), a shooting incident unfolded at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, claiming the lives of 16 people and leaving over 40 injured, including children and police officers. The attack, targeting members of the Jewish community celebrating Hanukkah on the beach (where an estimated 2,000 people were present), has been officially classified as a terrorist act by authorities.

Identities of the Perpetrators and the Attack Details

The two gunmen have been identified as father and son, Sajid Akram (50) and Naveed Akram (24). Prior to the attack, the pair told their family they were embarking on a weekend fishing trip to Jervis Bay—only to divert to Bondi Beach and carry out the premeditated violence. During the rampage, Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police, while Naveed Akram was apprehended at the scene and taken to hospital; he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The victims span generations: the youngest was just 10 years old, while the deceased include an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who was killed shielding his wife, and a Jewish rabbi. The scale of the tragedy has sent shockwaves through Australia and beyond, with the attack marking one of the deadliest acts of violence in the country’s recent history.

The Heroism of Ahmad: A Bystander Who Stopped Further Bloodshed

Amid the chaos, 43-year-old local fruit shop owner Ahmad emerged as a hero. Witnessing the gunman open fire on crowds, he charged from behind, disarmed the attacker by hand, and prevented what could have been an even larger loss of life. In the process, Ahmad was shot four to five times and remains hospitalized awaiting further surgery, according to his parents, who spoke to media on December 15.

Ahmad, a Syrian immigrant who moved to Australia in 2006, is a father of two young daughters (aged 3 and 6). His bravery has been widely celebrated: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, and U.S. President Donald Trump have all publicly commended his courage. A GoFundMe page set up to support Ahmad and his family has raised significant funds, with the largest donation—AUD 99,999—coming from American Jewish billionaire Bill Ackman.

Investigations and Underlying Concerns

Authorities are now probing how the father-son pair obtained high-powered firearms and whether they acted alone or with accomplices. A makeshift explosive device (IED) was found in the gunmen’s vehicle, prompting police to carry out raids across multiple locations in Sydney, including Naveed Akram’s residence in Bonnyrigg.

The attack has also reignited debates about Australia’s gun control laws—long hailed as a global model. Nearly 30 years after strict firearm regulations were introduced following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, concerns are growing: per capita gun ownership has risen in recent years, driven in part by Australia’s growing immigrant population. Licensed gun owners now hold an average of more than four firearms each (up from post-1996 levels), with over 70 individuals in Sydney alone owning more than 100 guns—one person even stockpiling 312 weapons.

Aftermath and Community Response

Parts of Bondi Beach have since reopened to the public. Thousands of Sydneysiders have gathered for vigil events to mourn the victims, while some residents have returned to the scene to retrieve personal belongings lost during the panic. The tragedy has united communities in grief, with messages of solidarity pouring in for the Jewish community and Ahmad’s family.

As Australia grapples with the aftermath of this devastating attack, questions linger about national security, gun control, and the need to protect vulnerable communities from targeted violence.
