The boxing world is reeling today following reports of a devastating car accident involving former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. On December 29, the 36-year-old British superstar narrowly escaped death on a Nigerian highway—a crash that tragically claimed the lives of two of his most trusted inner circle.
According to reports from ESPN and local sources, Joshua was traveling along the Makun section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when disaster struck. AJ was reportedly seated in the back of the vehicle, shirtless, when a sudden tire blowout at high speed caused the driver to lose control.
The vehicle careened off the road and collided violently with a parked truck. Images from the scene describe a harrowing sight, with glass shattered across the pavement and the vehicle sustaining catastrophic damage. While Joshua survived the impact, two of his long-time friends and team members—Sina Gami and Latif Adoyele—were tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
The loss of Gami and Adoyele strikes at the very heart of Joshua’s camp. The duo was responsible for AJ’s strength and conditioning and overall training architecture. More than just employees, they were considered "brothers" to the champ.
In a haunting twist of fate, just hours before the accident, Joshua had shared a video on social media showing him playing table tennis with Adoyele. What was meant to be a restorative holiday in Africa has now turned into a nightmare.
Eyewitnesses described Joshua as being in a state of "extreme shock" and "dazed" immediately following the collision. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, reached out from his own holiday in the Caribbean to confirm that Joshua sustained "minor injuries," though he refrained from providing further specifics out of respect for the families.
However, the tragedy has not been without controversy. Some reports and social media speculation have suggested that alcohol may have played a role in the crash, though these claims remain unverified by local authorities.
The accident comes just eight days after Joshua’s high-profile showdown with influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul on December 21. Joshua secured a victory in that bout, winning 4-2 rounds in a tactical display that reportedly earned both fighters a massive $92 million guaranteed purse.
The physicality of that fight was brutal; Joshua famously broke Paul’s jaw, requiring the American to have four titanium plates surgically implanted. Now, only a week later, Joshua finds himself facing a different kind of recovery—one that is emotional and psychological rather than physical.
Anthony Joshua remains one of the most decorated heavyweights of his era. From his 2012 Olympic Gold in London to his 22-0 undefeated professional start, AJ eventually unified the IBF, WBA, WBO, and IBO titles. His career record stands at 28-4 with 25 knockouts.
As the boxing community rallies around the former king, the focus remains on the families of the bereaved.
Our thoughts are with the families of Sina Gami and Latif Adoyele, and we wish Anthony Joshua a swift recovery from this trauma.
