New research has uncovered that natural compounds found in a single glass of citrus juice—such as orange or grapefruit juice—can boost immunity and reduce inflammation. European researchers analyzed over 200 studies to draw this conclusion.
Their findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology, reveal that micronutrients and other bioactive compounds in citrus juices play a key role in regulating oxidative stress, easing inflammation, and supporting immune responses.
“This review reinforces what we know about vitamin C and hesperidin in 100% orange juice,” says Dr. Rosa Walsh, Director of Scientific Research at the Florida Department of Citrus. “While vitamin C’s link to a healthy immune system is well-established, we’re excited to see more education on the importance of hesperidin and how these nutrients work synergistically. Hesperidin is found almost exclusively in orange juice and oranges; when combined with vitamin C, it helps enhance the body’s antioxidant activity, thereby reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.”
How Does Citrus Support Immune Health?
A properly functioning immune system is essential for overall health. While some factors affecting immunity are beyond our control, there are steps we can take to support it—like drinking citrus juice.
A 250ml serving of 100% orange juice provides more than twice the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Vitamin C deficiency can weaken immunity, making people more susceptible to infections. But vitamin C isn’t the only star nutrient in 100% orange juice: the drink also contains folate, which supports the function of various immune cells.![]()
Beyond micronutrients, 100% citrus juices are rich in polyphenolic flavonoids—natural compounds believed to boost immune function. Hesperidin is the primary polyphenol in orange juice, but other notable ones include hesperidin glycoside and naringin. Studies show all three compounds have anti-inflammatory properties. Since uncontrolled inflammation can damage tissues and trigger diseases, incorporating anti-inflammatory ingredients into your diet may offer significant benefits.
Melissa Azzaro, RD, registered dietitian and author of The Balanced Approach to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, weighs in: “Many people take vitamin C supplements to support their immune systems, but certain components in food simply can’t be replicated in a pill.”
“When you drink a glass of orange juice, you’re not just getting vitamin C—you’re also taking in folate, polyphenols, and other nutrients that work together to support immune health,” Azzaro explains. “Plus, the hydration provided by orange juice also contributes to immune wellness. For these and other reasons, I always recommend getting nutrients from food sources whenever possible, rather than relying on supplements.”
